Anyone who has served in the military for any length of time is familiar with those metal ovals that are worn on a chain around the neck. Officially they are identification tags but almost everyone calls them dog tags. Dog tags have their origins in the Civil War, but only unofficially. Soldiers of the time often wrote basic information about themselves on a piece of paper and pinned it to their uniforms in case they were killed or badly injured. Some units paid for a more durable identification. The service tag for pets must have your name and address on; your telephone number can be helpful too. Without a collar it is possible that your dog may be seized and treated as a stray.
